L’occasione del progetto è data dal recupero di un’abitazione a Enna, città al centro della Sicilia che offre contrapposte suggestioni: alla precarietà edilizia della nuova espansione si contrappone un centro storico ricco di emergenze, capace di far cogliere la forza del paesaggio dell’entroterra siciliano.

La struttura esistente, in muratura portante, versava in uno stato di abbandono e presentava forti criticità. Gli interventi strutturali, impiantistici e formali, nel rispetto della normativa vigente, hanno adeguato gli spazi alle necessità dettate dalla committenza.

Prendendo a prestito termini dalla medicina, non è un’operazione di lifting o di chirurgia estetica; il progetto attua sostituzioni di organi interni, tese al miglioramento delle condizioni degli spazi dell’abitare.

Il recupero dell’edificio pone una riflessione su due livelli: la scala urbana e la definizione del dettaglio.

Dal fronte sulla strada, l’abitazione si apre sulla vallata dominata dal Castello di Lombardia.

Sul prospetto le cornici in pietra scandiscono i pieni e i vuoti e la finitura bianca denuncia le trasformazioni attuate all’interno, aumentandone l’identità.

All’interno si è scelto di riposizionare i collegamenti verticali e di realizzare un patio, sul quale si affacciano gli ambienti interni, modellati con attenzione alla misura, in uno stretto dialogo tra materiali, colori e luce. Questa dona alla casa un’atmosfera cangiante: dal bagliore etereo diffuso nelle ore diurne dallo scavo bianco del patio, al calore dei tramonti che si insinua dalle aperture delle camere, la luce modula gli ambienti e si amplifica sul bianco interno della casa.

This project is about the recovery of a pre-existing Townhouse in Enna, a city in the center of Sicily which has contrasting urban conditions: on the one side the precariousness of the buildings in the new areas of the city, on the other the richness of a historical center full of emergences, capable to get the strength of the Sicilian landscape.

The original structure made of masonry bearing, was in a state of abandonment and revealed quickly strong criticalities. Thus, after listening the needs of client, we defined that it was necessary to work on structural interventions, on a new technical systems and a new distribution of space. All this should be done in accordance with current regulations.

The recovery at all required two levels of reflections: the urban scale and detail definition. The house-elevation on the street-side faces directly the “Castello di Lombardia” valley. The stone-frames of the openings mark the solids and the voids, while the white plastering reveals the internal changes making it recognizable outside. The interiors were modeled with attention to the detail in a direct dialogue between materials, colors and light. A new stairs and a Patio have been designed inside, thus to amplify light and to modulate the rooms, giving the house an atmosphere of ever-changing: from the ethereal glow spread during the day through the white patio, to the warmth of sunsets that creeps on the openings of the rooms.

In a few words, borrowing them from medical terms, we intended this project not as a face lifting; it was for us more about the replacement of inner organs, aimed at improving life.
